Welcome to the Canadian Coalition for School Libraries
A group concerned about the erosion of funding for school libraries in Canada.
Outlines its membership, mission, and activities.

  • School library programs are being drastically reduced across the country as school boards confront funding shortfalls

  • In the U.S., Europe and South America, policy-makers are increasing school library funding.“The Crisis in Canada’s School Libraries: The Case for Reform and Reinvestment, ” the first Canadian study examining the links between school libraries and student achievement, was published this spring

  • The CCSL is establishing provincial school library coalitions, composed of groups dedicated to promoting improved school library policies and funding. We are seeking funds to establish a national office to support provincial coalitions and promote re-investment in Canadian school libraries to the public, policy-makers and the media

  • The coalition's mission is to draw together a wide range of stakeholders -- including, but not limited to, parents, teacher-librarians, writers, educators, publishers, library wholesalers and literacy advocates -- in order to sponsor original research; provide policy analysis to decision-makers at all levels of government; develop new partnerships and approaches for fostering dynamic school libraries; and communicate the issues to the broader Canadian public." NEW REPORT SHOWS SCHOOL LIBRARIES IMPROVE STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT A report from the Canadian Coalition for School Libraries shows that students who attend schools with well-funded, properly-stocked libraries managed by qualified teacher-librarians, have higher achievement, improved literacy and greater success at the post-secondary level
