  • From this time he worked at his new `mission' with single-minded frenzy, and although he often suffered from extreme poverty and undernourishment, his output in the ten remaining years of his life was prodigious: about 800 paintings and a similar number of drawings

  • At this time his painting underwent a violent metamorphosis under the combined influence of and Japanese woodcuts, losing its moralistic flavour of social realism

  • He did 150 paintings besides drawings in the course of this year

Pictures of a few famous artist's works and biography.

  • It is at this time, however, that his religious devotion begins to wane and his interest in painting is renewed

  • Vincent abandons his religious pursuits and devotes himself exclusively to painting the miners and poverty-stricken weavers

  • While continuing his studies and painting with some acquaintances (painters Jan Hendrik Weissenbruch and George Hendrik Breitner), Vincent's physical state again deteriorates and he is hospitalized for three weeks for gonorrhoea

  • Upon his release Vincent begins to experiment with oils and spends much time painting nature as well as using Sien and her newborn child as models

  • At first the bad, winter weather prevents Vincent from working, but once spring arrives Vincent begins painting the flowering Provence landscapes

  • When able, Vincent continues his paintings of landscapes (his famous series of olive groves and cypresses) from the asylum, but is forced to stop when his attacks (in which he tries to poison himself by swallowing his own paints) return

  • Since these attacks often occur while Vincent is outdoors, he confines himself indoors and begins to do a series paintings based on the works of other artists he admires (specifically Millet and Delacroix)

Biography and timeline from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

  • Over the course of his decade-long career (1880–90), he produced nearly 900 paintings and more than 1, 100 works on paper

  • That same year, he executed his first independent works in watercolor and ventured into oil painting; he also enjoyed his first earnings as an artist: his uncle, the art dealer C

  • Captivated by the clarity of light and the vibrant colors of the Provençal spring, Van Gogh produced fourteen paintings of orchards in less than a month, painting outdoors and varying his style and technique

  • He envisioned her portrait as the central panel of a triptych, flanked by paintings of sunflowers

  • Venturing beyond the grounds of the hospital, he painted the surrounding countryside, especially its olive groves () and cypresses, which he saw as 'characteristic of Provence.' In June, he produced two paintings of cypresses, rendered in thick, impastoed layers of paint (; Cypresses , Rijksmuseum Kröller-Müller, Otterlo), likening the form of a cypress to an Egyptian obelisk in a letter to his brother Theo

  • In just over two months, Van Gogh averaged a painting a day; however, on July 27, 1890, he attempted suicide in a wheat field, shooting himself in the chest; he died two days later

    Van Gogh's Final Days

  • By this time, he had painted in the doctor's garden and had studied his art collection, which Vincent described to his brother as black antiquities, save Gachet's collection of Impressionist paintings

  • Gachet as he had posed Mme Ginoux for , one of the paintings he had brought to Auvers

  • He wrote Theo that while he enjoyed painting her, he still found the painting a difficult one to do

  • He gave this painting of the sixteen-year-old girl, dressed in blue and posed against a blue background to Ravoux; however, he first made a similar painting for Theo

  • Vincent remarked to his brother how Puvis had succinctly captured the grace of nature in this painting

  • In this painting, the horizontal canvas recalls Puvis de Chavannes's frieze-like compositions, just as the simplified figures evoke the elder artist's pastoral modernity

  • From late June until July 27, Van Gogh was absorbed in painting more than a dozen canvases using this new format; their subjects were the changing moods of the countryside at different times of the day

  • Van Gogh's depictions of the wheat fields of Auvers show the influence of paintings by Charles-François Daubigny, whose work he had deeply admired during his early Dutch years
