Medieval literature
Informative article by Radmila Milenkovic, taken from a book on history of Serbian
culture.

• , a composition of the founder in the church of the Holy Virgin at the Patriarchate of Pec Written Serbian literature in the Middle Ages was a special literary system, in terms of typology, poetics and literary genres

• When they began working on their own Slavic themes, they used only a more narrow aspect of this literature, those genres and that poetics with which the cult of the saints could be celebrated, because the first heroes of Slav literature were those responsible for Slav literacy and for standard language, Cyril and Methodius and their Slav disciples, whom the young Slavonic church considered to be saints

• Thus, the ritual genres are: hagiographies, homiletics, and hymnography, or according to their Slavic names: zitije (vita), pohvala (eulogy), sluzbe (church services)

• Everything which was created originally in written Serbian literature remained in that system: within the context of ritual genres - extra-ritual subject matter, all new themes were created within the system created for religious use

• Through this system of literary genres, it was not possible to express individual human feelings or secular themes, so the genres of oral poetry, lyric and epic, along with oral narration, stories and legends all supplemented the system of written genres

Mood, Genre, and Erotica

• | Mood, Genre, and Erotica I received a very thoughtful letter from a reader who asked to remain anonymous which asked, in part, Having spent some time reading erotica, I am curious about its definition and its role as a literary genre

• Do you start writing a story, and then decide to make it an erotic piece, or do you sit down and decide to write a specifically erotic piece? Do the requirements of erotica constrain the possibilities of a story? Is it possible to add erotic elements to genres such as horror, sci-fi, or the other way around? (I have permission to paraphrase the letter)

• Right now, I believe that "erotica" is a mood and "smut" is a genre

• A mood modifies a piece of fiction and dictates your response to it, while genre defines how the piece of fiction is shaped -- it's a set of conventions and shared assumptions between the reader and the writer

• (These are my definitions only; my lit crit books seem to be elsewhere right now.) "Genre" corresponds pretty closely to "publisher's category." Genres include science fiction, fantasy, Harlequin romance, and mystery

Genre and the Video Game
An analysis of genre categorization as applied to video games in contrast with
books and film, with definitions and examples.

• Genre and the Video Game Chapter 6 of, by Mark J

• Wolf The idea of categorization by genre, and the notion that there are certain conventions present in each genre, has been used in the study of literature and film and has proven to be a useful way of looking at both

• The idea of genre has not been without difficulties, such as the defining of what exactly constitutes a genre, overlaps between genres, and the fact that genres are always in flux as long as new works are being produced

• And genre study differs from one medium to the next., in his book, outlines some of the distinctions between literary genre study and film genre study

• He also notes that genre study in the past often focussed on subject matter and neglected the role of the audience

• He writes: Genre study may be more productive if we complement the narrow critical focus of traditional genre analysis with a broader sociocultural perspective

• Thus, we may consider a genre film not only as some filmmaker’s artistic expression, but further as the cooperation between artists and audience in celebrating their collective values and ideals

• In fact, many qualities traditionally viewed as artistic shortcomings—the psychologically static hero, for instance, or the predictability of the plot—assume a significantly different value when examined as components of a genre’s ritualistic narrative system

Portuguese Literature

biographies of several important authors.

• Ever since (16C), but particularly after the periods of and , the production of this literary genre has been steadily increasing, with an ever greater interest being shown by both the reading public and the critics

• On the basis of the relationship between the individual and society, which was itself the central feature in the apogee of the novel in the nineteenth century, narrative prose has ceaselessly created a whole range of different aspects that are worthy of being studied: the construction of the plot, the development of the characters, relationships of social dominance, the problematics of existence, subjective conflicts, the passage of time, the activity of writing, the hybrid nature of genres, the rewriting of texts in the form of a parody and the deconstruction of discourse

• Agustina Bessa-Luís, A Muralha - 1957 Amongst contemporary authors, there are a number of prominent figures whose vast literary output spreads across different genres, in particular poetry, the novel and the short story

• These dedicate themselves to a type of fiction that reworks the traditional novel and short story, bringing them closer to other genres (chronicles, poems in prose and other types of writing extraneous to normal literary conventions), experimenting with new forms for the expression of narrative discourse

Sophismata (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)
Article on this common form of medieval philosophical writing, by John Longeway.
From the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy.

• The so-called sophismata -literature assumed more and more importance during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, and it is not an exaggeration to claim that many important developments in philosophy (mainly in logic and natural philosophy) appeared in texts of this kind, where masters could feel free to investigate problems and develop their own views, much more than they could in more academic and strictly codified literary genres

• The preceding sophisma can be considered quite characteristic of the genre insofar as we see that the syncategorematic terms ‘or’ and ‘and’ occur in it and are responsible for the ambiguity of the sentence

• If we look at the evolution of literary genres, we note that the twelfth- and early-thirteenth century syncategoremata -literature came to be absorbed in the sophisma -literature
