Flash Photography with Canon EOS Cameras - Part I.
Instructions on how to use Speedlite electronic flash units with Canon EOS cameras.

  • Flash Photography with Canon EOS Cameras - Part I

  • But flash photography has always been a very difficult technique to master on any camera system

  • And you can’t even see the flash if you’re looking through the viewfinder of an SLR camera anyway, as the mirror will have been raised for the duration of the flash

  • So, here’s some information that may help you understand some of the mysteries of flash photography with Canon EOS camera equipment

  • Note that this document covers Canon EOS products, including digital EOS cameras

  • Canon’s PowerShot series of digital cameras can use Speedlite EX-series flash units, but since they aren’t EOS cameras there are significant differences in the way they work

  • Learning more about flash photography with EOS cameras is hard as there’s relatively limited information available on the topic

  • Canon’s manuals tend to be fairly short, and not much information has been published about the flash algorithms used by EOS cameras

  • It also deals primarily with one camera/flash combination - the Elan II and the Speedlite 380EX

    Introduction to Canon EOS cameras
By Toomas Tamm, with a glossary and list of related links.

  • Introduction to Canon EOS cameras Intro to EOS Introduction to Canon EOS cameras by Warning: This page contains outdated information! Please look elsewhere for reviews of the new Elan 7 (EOS 30) and EOS 1V

  • Sorry! This page describes Canon EOS single-lens-reflex (SLR) camera bodies

  • Canon uses different names for cameras sold in the USA and elsewhere

  • Except for some differences between the EOS 5 and A2E, equivalent cameras are identical except for the name

  • My limited experience with other camera systems does not permit me to write similar descriptions of those, but I am sure that there is no problem-free camera model on the market today

  • These modes also provide a way to force the camera to using spot metering (macro mode) and predictive auto-focus (sports mode) which are less convenient to select otherwise

  • Being an entry-level model, several cost-saving features have been incorporated into the camera

  • The 300 (as well as the 3000 described earlier) uses an unusual film loading technique, which will protect the film from being spoiled when the back of the camera is opened by accident: After film has been loaded, it is wound to the end of the roll and then exposed from the last frame towards the beginning

Mid-roll Film Change in Canon EOS Cameras
Practical advice on how to replace an unfinished roll of film with another in
    Canon EOS cameras.

  • Mid-roll Film Change in Canon EOS Cameras Mid-roll Film Change Mid-roll Film Change in Canon EOS Cameras One of 's pages With many Canon EOS cameras it is possible to rewind unfinished film, replace it with another one, and later switch back and continue shooting where you left off

  • This way you can use films of different type (slide, negative, black and white) or speed (100, 400, 800) exactly at the time you need them, without having to think too long in advance about what to load in the camera

  • Why is it possible? The newer EOS cameras use infrared light to position the film at the beginning of the roll as well as for each frame

  • In contrast, many older cameras use mechanical sprockets, and the initial position of the mechanics is not precisely determined when you load film

  • Which camera do I need? For most convenience, you will need one which uses infrared film counting and has leader-out rewind capability

  • What should I pay attention to? When you replace film next time, have a look into the inside of the camera, where you normally have film

  • Whenever you load film, make sure that the film is not covering these small holes as you close the back of the camera (just as shown on the drawing)

    DCRP Review: Canon Digital Rebel
By Jeff Keller. Comparison to the EOS-10D. "For those who want top-notch photos,
    robust performance, and no gimmicks".

Custom Functions for the EOS 1n (RS)
Details the various special custom functions for the EOS 1N and EOS 1N RS.

  • cf_eos1n.htm Number of hits on this page: 19 new Custom Functions for the EOS 1n (RS) SPECIAL CUSTOM FUNCTIONS FOR THE EOS 1N AND EOS 1N RS Your EOS 1N or EOS 1N RS camera comes with 14 different built-in Custom Functions offering 35 different shooting options

  • These new functions can be written to the E2PROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-only Memory) chip of your current camera

  • Unfortunately, you cannot have them all only one new function can be added to a camera (and not all are available for the EOS 1N RS)

  • If the camera back is closed and film has not been loaded, pressing the shutter button will not release the shutter

  • This eliminates the risk of shooting with an empty camera

  • (Not available for EOS 1N RS) SPECIAL CUSTOM FUNCTION 02 Changes the default camera settings

  • (This is the same as CF-5 on the EOS 5 camera) SPECIAL CUSTOM FUNCTION 04 Switches between focusing points

  • When the shutter button is partially depressed, pressing the focusing point selector toggles between the camera-selected focusing point and the centre focusing point

  • This SCF allows a user-selected fixed speed to be set, reducing the risk of camera shake

Canon EOS Digital Rebel (EOS 300D) Review
Review by Bob Atkins. "It's clearly better and more versatile than similarly
priced non SLR digicams in the same price range, though it may be slightly larger ...

  • Though it's a Rebel, which is the designation for Canon's most basic, entry level, cameras, it has many features you might only expect to find on more advanced models, such as depth-of-field preview, white balance bracketing and flash sync at 1/200

  • This is the first part which deals with the Digital Rebel camera body in some detail

  • Since the sensor is smaller than a standard 35mm frame (36mm x 24mm), lenses will have a narrower field of view when mounted on a Digital Rebel than when mounted on a full frame 35mm camera

  • Exposure Modes There are the usual Canon EOS exposure modes found on all film based consumer EOS cameras, so if you've ever used a Rebel or Elan, these will be very familiar

  • Programmed image control modes ("PIC" modes) Portrait Landscape Close-up Sports Night Portrait Flash Off E-TTL autoflash program AE ISO settings and noise The camera can be set from ISO 100 to 1600 in full stop steps (100, 200, 400, 800, 1600) in the "creative" modes

  • Just to show that all this isn't really that important, the bottom right shot is the top left shot after a slight color tweak in PhotoShop and is, I think, the best of the four! Personally I don't expect the camera to fully optimize colors to what *I* will like best

    Canon EOS Digital Rebel 300D
Contains the art of landscape and nature photography using traditional as well
    as digital image processing techniques.

  • | © 1995-2006 Michael Reichmann Canon EOS Digital Rebel 300D "Rebel" noun : 14th century — one who rebels or participates in a rebellion — Rebel With A Cause The is Canon's latest marketing step toward domination of the digital camera market

  • But while photographers rejoice, what does this portend for other manufacturers? And, what does the consumer get for his or her money? Below is a table (listed alphabetically) showing typical online prices for the available 6MP cameras in the U.S

  • ( I've included the Sigma even though strictly speaking it isn't a 6MP camera, because it produces comparable results and is aggressively priced, and also the Olympus E-1 is included for completeness, even though it's a 5MP camera and not yet shipping.) Canon Digital Rebel $899 Canon 10D $1, 499 Fuji S2 Pro $1, 799 Nikon D100 $1, 699 Olympus E-1 $1, 799 Pentax *ist D $1, 699 Sigma SD9 $1, 099 Not much more needs to be said on this subject

  • Canon's Rebel costs anywhere from 30% — 45% less than other 6MP cameras, and when you consider it equipped with its kitted 18-55mm EF-S zoom lens, the differential is even greater
