44th New York Infantry Regiment & Colonel E. Elmer Ellsworth
Ellsworth's Avengers. A brief history of the regiment, plus sources.

  • 44th New York Infantry Regiment & Colonel E

  • Following the attack on Fort Sumter, Ellsworth quickly organized a regiment of New York City firemen as the First New York Zouaves (later the 11th New York Volunteers)

  • Ellsworth had been born in 1837 near Albany, New York, and a call went out from a number of the prominent citizens of that city to avenge his death by raising a regiment made up of one man from each town and ward in the Empire State

  • The men selected for the regiment arrived in Albany from the four corners of New York State on August 8, 1861, and the regiment was quickly formed

  • In the spring of 1862, the 44th New York Infantry participated in the Peninsula campaign, suffering significant casualties during the battles of the Seven Days including Hanover Court House, Gaines' Mill and Malvern Hill

  • The 44th New York Infantry continued to see action with the Army of the Potomac during the remainder of 1862, again experiencing heavy losses at the battles of Second Bull Run and Fredericksburg, fighting side by side with the 83rd Pennsylvania

  • The regiment avoided the bloodbath at Antietam when it was held in reserve, and the 44th New York Infantry also suffered only minor casualties at Chancellorsville

George L. Burr: Witchcraft in New York - The Cases of Hall and ...
Original text, provided by the Hanover Historical Texts Project; Hanover College.

  • These were of course in ad-vance of their fellows; but that Holland was throughout the century a refuge for the victims and the foes of witch-persecution in neighbor lands would seem to point to a general skepticism, and how cautious, with all their credulity, even Calvinist divines had grown in such an atmosphere, New England learned in 1692 when she asked an opinion from her New York neighbors

  • to be found in the [Page 42] annals of the Dutch province is a fear expressed by Governor Kieft that the Indian medicine-men were directing their incantations against himself., Accusations of witchcraft the New York jurisdiction did not wholly escape; but they followed the English occupation and were, in differing ways, a legacy from New England

  • Even the Dutch domimon had included towns peopled from New England; and it was to these that in 1662 (the same year m which, as we have seen, he was interceding with the Connecticut government for his young kinswoman Judith Varlet) Governor Stuyvesant found it wise, while granting them their own magistrates and their own courts, to prescribe that 'in dark and dubious matters, especially in witchcrafts, the party aggrieved might appeal to the Governor and Council.' But when in 1664 the English king bestowed upon his brother, the Duke of York, the territory occupied by the Dutch colony and equipped him with the means to take it by force, he added to the gift that greater eastern half of Long Island which had not only been settled, but till now had been governed, by the New Englanders

    Welcome to The American Presidency
A detailed biography written for students. Includes fact file.

  • A power in New York state politics, he was the successful Whig candidate for vice president in 1848 and became president on the death of Zachary Taylor in 1850

  • That year the Anti-Masonic excitement occasioned by the abduction of William Morgan, a Mason known to be publishing an exposé of the order, swept over western New York, and Fillmore, along with many National Republicans in that region, joined the Anti-Masonic movement

  • His popularity in Erie county marked him as one of the outstanding political leaders in western New York, and in 1832 he won election to Congress on the Anti-Masonic ticket

  • While in Congress he became increasingly restive under Weed's leadership of the New York Whig party

  • He later declined Governor Seward's appointment as state comptroller, but complained when denied the post of vice chancellor of New York

  • During the 1840s Weed led the New York Whig party's liberal wing, which was hostile to slavery

  • The influx of foreigners into New York state posed another political issue, and Fillmore sympathized with those who were hostile to the recently naturalized citizens

  • The abolition of trusteeism In New York marked the beginning of his episcopate

  • The bishop convoked in 1841 the first Diocesan Synod of New York, which enacted timely legislation affecting spiritual matters, and advised for tenure and administration of church property wise regulations which placed the rector of the church in control of temporals as well as spirituals

  • Unfavorable legislation followed, but was soon repealed, and prepared the way for the present satisfactory religious corporation law of the State of New York Returning from Europe, whither he had gone in 1839 to seek aid for his diocese, Bishop Hughes found his flock involved in a movement to modify the existing common school system, which, professing to be non-sectarian, was undermining, in fact, the religious beliefs of Catholic children
